Growing Boy

Two months ago, Josiah entered the hospital wearing size 12 shorts.  He had a couple of size 10’s that fit him also.  Yesterday, I noticed the shorts he had on when I arrived were zipped, but the snap at his waist was unsnapped.  He tummy was just too pudgy for it to close.

I took them off and put a larger size on him, a pair with an adjustable elastic waist band hidden inside. (Who ever came up with that ingenious idea is my hero.  We get so many more months of wear with just the simple addition of a piece of elastic and a couple of buttons sewn in.  Fabulous!) They didn’t fit him either.

Scrounging around in the drawer, I found some size 14 shorts recently added to Josiah’s wardrobe. They fit like a glove.  Literally.  The snap snapped, but there wasn’t much wiggle room. He’s really ready for a size 16. This boy has gone from a size 10/12 to size 16 in just a little over 9 weeks.  I find that incredible.

Josiah has always been thin, except at age 3 when he plumped up a bit.  It didn’t last though.  In fact he was able to wear the same sweater at age 5 that he wore 2 years earlier.  We are used to him getting lots and lots of wear out of his clothes because his body size changes slowly.

He eats a boat load of food, but his energy level has always been so high, he burns it off rather quickly.

At the hospital, he isn’t really burning much of anything off.  His caloric intake has increased; however, his energy level has greatly decreased. When he gets outdoors, it’s usually strapped into a wheel chair (still!).  I was encouraged to learn he actually walked 5 laps around the playground yesterday.  That’s an improvement.

Chandler visited Josiah at the hospital 2 days ago.  She hasn’t seen him since he went in and was surprised at how much he’s grown.  I guess I just hadn’t noticed since I see him every day.  That is, not until his little buddha belly was poking out from under his shirt and his pants were wide open at the zipper.

Today I dropped off Adult S shirts and size 16 shorts. I brought home all the smaller clothes to donate to Goodwill.  As much as I want to deny it, our little guy is growing up; way too fast for me.  It will be interesting to see if his weight levels off any once he gets back here and has access to his trampoline.  All the jumping he does may impact his weight a bit.

Then again, he is a teenager now, plus some of his medications have changed.  A side effect of an increased appetite may mean mass quantities of food will be the norm for a while. It might not be long before he’s wearing size 18.

Hey, maybe the timing here is just perfect.  I know just the thing for Josiah this holiday season.
