Day 25

See how happy Josiah was to see his favorite green juice? I whipped up a few jars at home and brought them to the hospital last week, knowing surely he would start to drink liquids again, given this option.

I was wrong.  He wouldn’t touch it.  He wouldn’t touch the green smoothie I brought him either.  Actually, he drank very little of anything, even up to the time he was discharged. A few ounces of water here and there, but nothing of significance.

He sure was smiley though. I’ll take smiley over grumpy and sick any day of the week. We are just happy to have our little guy home!

Day 24

Transitions aren’t always easy for Josiah.  This is where he planted himself when Rick brought him home from the hospital. He stayed in the back yard like this for quite some time. We tried coaxing him and encouraging him.  We even left the back door wide open for him.  He preferred to lounge across the patio furniture in this not very comfortable position with his knees rubbing on the concrete.

Who knows what was going through his mind.  Who knows what he thought would happen when he got back inside.  Maybe it just felt so good to be out in the warm Texas sun he just wanted to enjoy it for a while.  Josiah doesn’t get much opportunity to make choices in his life.  He lives on a schedule and is often instructed where to go, when to go and what to do when he gets there.  It must be difficult to have such limited freedom. Day 23

Josiah’s teacher came by the hospital and brought balloons.  If you know anything about Josiah, you know this boy adores balloons.

When the balloons arrived however, he showed no interest.  He barely looked at them. He pushed them away when we put them beside him.

But the very next day Josiah played with them for hours. He’s like that with many things. The first time he’s exposed to something he automatically rejects it.  He even rejects something he’s seen many times before and has enjoyed in the past.  I’m not sure why.  We’re used to it.  This was Josiah’s last full day in the hospital.  Based on those smiles alone, you could tell he was feeling better.

It doesn’t take much to make this boy happy.  It doesn’t take much to make me happy either. Having our boy back home put a huge smile on my face too.

Day 22

Josiah is FREE! This afternoon he was released from the hospital.  We are so very grateful for all the prayers and support and well wishes while he was there.

The Doctor told Rick it was time to send Josiah home because all the kids around him were getting sick.  They came in without a runny nose or cough, but quickly caught it from somewhere and spread it around to all the other kids. Josiah picked it up by Saturday morning.

Funny how that happens.  Josiah didn’t come into contact with any other patients.  He didn’t visit the play room.  He rarely left his room, except for 2 short trips in the wheel chair for a cafeteria visit.

Everyone who came into his room I assume, squirted antibacterial scrub on their hands before entering.  I’m certain they did that for each patient they visited.  So perhaps it was an airborne virus that spread around the hospital unit.  Doesn’t matter.  Josiah is home and that is fantastic.
